Alberta separation could cost up to $170 billion in its first five years, report estimates
A report commissioned by Alberta’s government estimates separation from Canada could cost $50 billion to $170 billion over its first five years, depending on how negotiations unfold.

A report commissioned by the Alberta government estimates that separating from Canada could cost as much as $170 billion in the first five years alone. Prepared by the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy, the report puts the minimum cost at $50 billion.
The spending would cover new infrastructure, staff to manage and oversee the transition, and Alberta’s share of the federal debt. The report considers a smooth breakup with Canada and a second scenario in which a hardline federal position in negotiations produces a difficult and far more costly transition.
Albertans are scheduled to vote Oct. 19 on whether to remain in Canada or hold a second binding referendum on leaving the country.
