The Government of Canada has updated its travel advice for South Korea, warning Canadians about an ongoing heat wave and the risk of dehydration and heatstroke.

The advisory notes that severe heat waves can affect South Korea between June and September. Travellers are urged to stay indoors or in shade during midday, carry enough water, remain hydrated and monitor local heat warnings.

The Korea Meteorological Administration reported Friday that 23 people had died and 2,665 patients had been hospitalized with heat-related illnesses. The report cited a temperature of 40.2 C in Seoul’s Nowon district at about 3:28 p.m., while heat warnings covered most of the country.

South Korea’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety has published heat-safety guidance and a map of cooling centres and other facilities. Canada also advises people travelling abroad to review destination-specific travel advice and considers registration through the free Registration of Canadians Abroad service.
