Protests planned for Carney investment summit in Toronto
Labour, Indigenous, climate and housing advocates plan a Monday demonstration as executives and global asset managers gather for Canada’s first investment summit.

Protests are planned around Prime Minister Mark Carney’s investment summit in Toronto, an event intended to attract new investment to Canada. Organizers say Carney is aligning himself with business leaders they believe are worsening global crises.
Hundreds of executives and global asset managers are arriving in Toronto to examine major projects at various stages of development. The gathering is Canada’s first investment summit and forms a key part of Carney’s plan to stimulate $1 trillion in investment in Canada over the next five years.
Demonstrators, including labour unions, Indigenous leaders, and climate and housing advocates, plan to mobilize Monday under a banner reading “The Many vs. The Money.” They also plan what organizers describe as “direct intervention” with summit attendees.
Organizers oppose what they characterize as Carney’s plan to place Canada’s economic future in the hands of chief executive officers. They say they are concerned about the future of public services, pipelines and arms manufacturing.
The prime minister’s event begins Sunday evening with a welcome reception, where Carney is scheduled to deliver brief remarks.
