Police seek dash-cam video after a man’s body is found on Highway 1 in Burnaby
Highway 1 eastbound was closed near Kensington after Burnaby RCMP received a report of a deceased man at 5:54 a.m. Tuesday. BC Highway Patrol is investigating and asks witnesses and drivers for video.

Police are asking the public to help investigate after a man’s body was found on Highway 1 in Burnaby early Tuesday, Oct. 6. DriveBC first posted shortly before 6:30 a.m. that only the eastbound HOV lane near Kensington Avenue was open, with emergency vehicles at the scene. Police later closed all eastbound lanes at the Kensington exit. The Kensington eastbound on-ramp also remains closed until further notice.
BC Highway Patrol said Burnaby RCMP received a call at 5:54 a.m. about an adult man’s body in the eastbound lanes just east of Kensington. The man was deceased and had injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle, the patrol said. The eastbound lanes were fully closed to preserve evidence. BC Highway Patrol has taken over the investigation because the vehicle may have left the scene.
DriveBC photos showed heavy delays on Highway 1 westbound, while Google Maps showed delays on parts of alternate routes including Lougheed Highway and Canada Way. Police are seeking dash-cam footage from anyone who drove near Kensington in the minutes before the body was found. BC Highway Patrol said video may contain useful information even if it does not capture the collision itself.
Anyone with dash-cam footage or who saw anything unusual is asked to call BC Highway Patrol – Burnaby at 604-526-9744 and quote file 1003 2026-3360. Sgt. Michael McLaughlin said police are investigating all possibilities and have not ruled anything out. Investigators especially want to speak with anyone who saw something unusual on Highway 1 near Kensington between 5:30 and 6 a.m. Tuesday.
The incident came less than two weeks after a fatal two-vehicle crash closed a similar stretch of Highway 1 through Burnaby for several hours. Authorities said Burnaby RCMP received a report shortly before 12:15 a.m. on Sept. 23 that a pickup truck was travelling east in the highway’s westbound lanes and had collided with a westbound four-door sedan. Cpl. Brett Urano, media relations officer for RCMP E Division, said Burnaby RCMP, Emergency Health Services and the Burnaby Fire Department attended. Two sedan passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. The sedan’s driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. The pickup driver was arrested at the scene and taken to the Burnaby RCMP detachment for further investigation.
