The Vancouver School Board welcomed approximately 50,000 students to the 2026–27 school year following the Labour Day weekend.

In Coal Harbour, the new cəw̓as Ch'elxwá7elch Skwuláw̓txw Seaside Elementary opened to 275 kindergarten to Grade 7 students. The name cəw̓as, from Musqueam and Tsleil-Waututh Nation languages, means “facing out onto the water, facing away from the shore.” Ch'elxwá7elch skwuláw̓txw, from the Squamish Nation language, connects the school with the traditional name for the area around present-day Lost Lagoon and Coal Harbour. Principal Riley McMitchell said students and staff were excited to begin the year in the waterfront building. Classes toured the school, explored learning spaces and visited the library.

At Killarney Secondary School, approximately 287 Grade 8 students began high school. Students reconnected with friends, reviewed their schedules and attended grade-level, one-hour assemblies where they met the principal and received advice for the year ahead. Grade 9 student Thailyn said she was looking forward to band class and playing a new instrument, while fellow Grade 9 student Lia said she was eager to take media arts.
