Chilliwack again had the highest Crime Severity Index among major Canadian cities in 2025, according to the latest Statistics Canada data. Its CSI was 134.3, a slight improvement from the previous year but still far above the national figure of 75.01.

The index measures both the volume and seriousness of police-reported crime. The report attributes Chilliwack’s high result mainly to property crime, assaults and drug offences, with a relatively small population also affecting the rate. The city says its 2025 population was about 112,500, including First Nations communities, after adding roughly 11,700 residents between 2020 and 2025.

Kamloops recorded the next-highest CSI at 126.2. Vancouver’s was 83.5, compared with 55 in Toronto, 61.7 in Calgary and 74.6 in Victoria. B.C.’s overall CSI fell from 93.9 in 2024 to 92.4 in 2025, after reaching 104.6 in 2023.

Nationally, the CSI declined five per cent, its second consecutive annual decrease. Statistics Canada said the conventional crime rate fell two per cent to 5,585 incidents per 100,000 people. Shoplifting under $5,000 remained the largest factor offsetting the overall decline, while the homicide rate fell for a third straight year.
