Surrey City Council has marked the completion of two new turf fields at Cloverdale Athletic Park. The work is the first phase of more than $12.3 million in improvements, including new road access and a parking lot at one of Surrey’s major sports destinations.

Mayor Brenda Locke said the fields will allow more children, local teams and families to take part in sports throughout the year. She said the investment responds to growing demand for quality recreation facilities and strengthens Surrey’s ability to host sporting events that benefit the local economy and community.

Design and construction began last fall to replace grass fields that are more prone to weather-related closures after heavy rain. The 50-acre park includes ball diamonds, a basketball court, a multi-use sport box, playgrounds, a bike park, a water playground, tennis courts, grass and synthetic fields, and a field house with change rooms and washrooms.

A new 110-stall parking lot and a fully signalized intersection are being added beside the new fields and are expected to be completed in November. They will provide access to Surrey United Soccer Club’s new indoor practice facility, now being built in the park after council approved a 30-year lease with the club.
