Floating RV on South Surrey river prompts social media speculation
A homemade vessel carrying an RV is moored on Surrey’s Nicomekl River, prompting questions online about its legality, safety and environmental impact.

A homemade floating vessel carrying an RV has drawn attention in South Surrey after appearing on the Nicomekl River near Nicomekl Portage Park and the old Elgin Road bridge behind the Crescent Road Esso.
The vessel appears to consist of an RV sitting on a raft made from empty barrels, what look like aluminum or steel beams, and strips of plywood fastened with straps. Photos circulated in local social media groups after the owner reportedly built it over two days in the Portage Park parking lot and launched it into the river with a crane.
The vessel does not appear to have a motor. A City of Surrey bylaw infraction ticket also appeared to be taped to the front of the RV. When a Peace Arch News reporter visited Friday morning, Sept. 11, no one answered when the reporter called out for the owner or builder.
Online reaction was mixed. Commenters questioned whether the vessel was legal or seaworthy and how it might fare in wind or the first winter storm. Others raised concerns about possible environmental effects from human waste, grey water and a potential sinking.
Peace Arch News has contacted the City of Surrey and Transport Canada for comment.
