Major Highway 1 collision causes extensive traffic delays in Metro Vancouver
Highway 1 westbound at Kensington has reopened after a serious collision in Burnaby, but congestion and lane-clearing work are still causing major delays.

DriveBC confirmed that Highway 1 westbound at Kensington Avenue had reopened as of 11:45 a.m. following an earlier vehicle incident. Drivers should still expect major delays because of congestion and crews clearing lane closures.
DriveBC first posted about the incident shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 23, reporting that all westbound lanes at Kensington Avenue were blocked. Police later fully closed Highway 1 westbound between Kensington Avenue and Sprott Street while they investigated the serious collision.
Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Mike Kalanj said in a 6:21 a.m. Wednesday release that traffic was being directed off Highway 1 at Kensington Avenue and back onto the highway via Sprott Street. The westbound Highway 1 on-ramp from Kensington was also closed at the time, and drivers could not access westbound Highway 1 from Kensington Avenue.
The closure had been expected to remain in place through the morning rush hour and could have lasted into the afternoon. DriveBC photos showed extensive westbound delays, while Google Maps showed heavy traffic on alternate routes including Lougheed Highway and Barnet Highway. Police had not released information about any injuries from the incident.
