Richmond RCMP warn residents as fraud incidents continue to rise
Richmond RCMP are urging residents to verify exchange services and transfers after recent investment, impersonation, online marketplace and currency frauds.

Richmond RCMP say fraud continues to rise in the community, with recent scams involving investments, impersonation, online marketplaces and currency exchange. Warning signs can include exchange rates higher than those offered by verified financial institutions, requests to transfer funds, transactions arranged through social media or messaging platforms, and people who cannot provide identification or complete a transaction through a financial institution.
Police advise residents to verify exchange services before sending money and to use credit unions, reputable banks and verified currency exchange businesses. They also advise against sending money to an unknown person or business and urge caution with unsolicited offers. Cpl. Denise Kam of the Richmond RCMP Economic Unit said fraudsters rely on urgency and trust, and encouraged people to take time to verify before sending money. Residents are asked to report suspicious activity to local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
