Canada recalls popular hot pepper paste over undeclared wheat
Health Canada says people with a wheat allergy, celiac disease or other gluten-related disorders should not consume the affected products. The recall covers three package sizes distributed in Alberta, B.C. and Saskatchewan.

A popular hot pepper paste has been pulled from shelves in parts of Canada because it contains undeclared wheat. Taeyangcho Gochujang is a Korean condiment made from fermented chili peppers and commonly used in dishes such as bibimbap, pork bulgogi and tteokbokki. In a recall notice issued Oct. 3, Health Canada warned people with a wheat allergy, celiac disease or other gluten-related disorders not to consume the affected products.
The notice lists the brand as “N/A” because the product label uses Korean characters only. The report describes it as a popular red container sold at big-box grocery stores and Asian markets. The recall covers three sizes: 170 g (barcode 8801075012323), 500 g (barcode 8801075012316) and 1 kg (barcode 8801075012620). Consumers are urged to check the package size and barcode against the products in their pantries. The products were distributed in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.
Health Canada says a customer complaint prompted the recall. No reactions associated with consumption of the products have been reported. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is conducting a food safety investigation, which could lead to recalls of other products. The notice does not say whether customers can receive a full refund. People with questions can contact the agency at 1-613-773-2342 or by email.
