Delta school leaders thank teachers on World Teachers’ Day 2026
Delta school board chair Joe Muego and superintendent Doug Sheppard thanked teachers and other district staff for their work supporting students, and outlined the day’s 2026 theme and the profession’s history.

Delta School Board Chair Joe Muego said World Teachers’ Day commemorates the anniversary of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. The recommendation sets out teachers’ rights and responsibilities and standards for their initial preparation and continuing education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions. World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated since 1994.
The 2026 theme is “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.” The day celebrates how teachers are transforming education and also prompts reflection on the support they need to thrive, maximize their impact and elevate the profession’s status globally.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Muego thanked all district staff for their hard work and unwavering commitment to supporting Delta students. Those recognized included educators, support staff, school and district administrators, CUPE 1091 members and DTA members.
Superintendent Doug Sheppard added his thanks. He said teaching shapes lives, strengthens communities and helps build a better future. Delta educators inspire curiosity, foster belonging, support student well-being and help learners discover their strengths and potential. They innovate and respond to students’ diverse needs with professionalism, compassion and expertise. Their influence reaches beyond the classroom and has a lasting impact on students, families and the wider community.
Sheppard extended the district’s sincere gratitude to teachers for their commitment to learning, inclusion and student success, and for the care, knowledge and encouragement they bring to their work each day. He said they help advance the district’s vision of an innovative, inclusive community where all learners belong and everyone soars, and wished them a happy World Teachers’ Day.
