King George Boulevard was closed for several hours Monday, Sept. 7, after a crash involving a Surrey Police Service vehicle and another vehicle seriously injured a pedestrian and a driver.

The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO) and Surrey Police Service (SPS) collision investigators attended the scene in Whalley. At about 2:56 a.m., a civilian driving a Chevy Avalanche SUV crashed near a SkyTrain pillar beside King George Station.

The IIO said in an online post that SPS officers had attempted to stop the black truck near King George Boulevard and 96 Avenue. A collision then occurred between the pickup truck and a police vehicle, and the driver did not stop, the IIO said. Shortly afterward, the pickup truck struck a concrete SkyTrain barrier on King George Boulevard at Holland Commons, injuring its driver.

SPS said in a news release issued at 1:43 p.m. Monday that a pedestrian was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

King George Boulevard was closed in both directions between about 98A Avenue and 100 Avenue while investigators examined the scene. SPS advised motorists to use alternate routes.

The IIO asked anyone who witnessed any part of the incident, or who has video including dash-camera footage, to contact the office by phone or email through iiobc.ca.
