Surrey to step up fireworks enforcement around Halloween and Diwali
Surrey is reminding residents that fireworks cannot be sold, bought or used in the city without federal certification and a valid Surrey Fire Service permit. Bylaw officers will patrol high-activity areas around Halloween and Diwali; fines range from $400 to $50,000.

The City of Surrey reminded residents on Oct. 6 that selling, buying or using fireworks in the city requires federal certification and a valid permit from the Surrey Fire Service. People under 18 are prohibited from possessing fireworks. Unauthorized fireworks can cause injuries and fires, and distress vulnerable residents and animals.
Under Surrey Fireworks Regulation Bylaw, 1974, No. 4200, fines range from a minimum of $400 to a maximum of $50,000. Each day an offence occurs is treated as a separate violation. Police and bylaw enforcement officers are authorized to issue fines.
Halloween is Oct. 31 and Diwali is Nov. 8. The city says bylaw officers will be deployed in high-activity areas across Surrey leading up to Halloween and on Diwali, working with police. Officers will respond to reports, gather evidence, issue tickets and involve police when needed.
Anyone who sees fireworks being discharged illegally can call Surrey Bylaws at 604-591-4370. Call 9-1-1 only in an emergency. The city says reports help identify hotspots and support enforcement.
Surrey says it is proud of its diverse community and encourages safe, respectful celebrations. It asks residents to work together to protect neighbourhoods and help everyone enjoy a safe Halloween and Diwali.
