The City of Port Coquitlam will hold its annual Terry Fox Hometown Run on Sunday, Sept. 20, marking 46 years of Terry Fox’s legacy. The run begins at 10 a.m., with registration opening at 8 a.m. at the Terry Fox Registration Tent at Hyde Creek Recreation Centre, 1379 Laurier Ave.

The route will pass the Gateway of Giants sculptures at Port Coquitlam Community Centre, travel through the Marathon of Hope in Terry Fox Hometown Square and return to Hyde Creek Recreation Centre. Water stations and messages will be placed along the route. It is wheelchair-accessible, and participants may walk, run, cycle or take part using another form of movement in support of cancer research.

Mayor Brad West said the annual event honours Terry Fox’s determination and the community’s shared commitment to his legacy. Commemorative T-shirts will be sold at Hyde Creek Recreation Centre, Port Coquitlam Community Centre and City Hall while supplies last.

Road closures are planned to protect participants. The 1300 block of Laurier Avenue, from Hyde Creek Recreation Centre to Coast Meridian Road, will close from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with no parking on either side. From 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., closures will affect Coast Meridian Road between Laurier and Kingsway avenues in both directions, the Coast Meridian Connector north of Tim Hortons, Coast Meridian Overpass, portions of Kingsway, Kelly, Mary Hill and Wilson avenues.

Affected residents will retain access to their homes but may need to show a B.C. driver’s licence at checkpoints. Access for Manning Square, 3046 Coast Meridian Rd. and Beaumaris Close will be permitted when safe. Detours and signs will be in place.

The Kingsway entrance to the Port Coquitlam Community Centre parkade and the Wilson and Kingsway lots will close from 10 p.m. Saturday until roads reopen Sunday, at about noon. Mary Hill Road access will remain open for parkade traffic only, and the gravel lot opposite Wilson and Kingsway will provide overflow parking. Details are available at portcoquitlam.ca/terryfox.
