Bradley Creek fire survivors face emotional toll of losing homes
Evacuees are receiving support in Vernon after the Bradley Creek wildfire destroyed homes on Okanagan Indian Band Reserve, where residents cannot yet return because hot spots remain.

People displaced by the Bradley Creek wildfire are receiving emergency support at Vernon’s Kal Tire Centre as they begin to absorb the loss of their homes and belongings.
Kevin Statham said he and his wife escaped a wall of fire with little more than what they could place in their car. He said the house they lost had belonged to his father.
An estimated 200 non-member leased homes on Okanagan Indian Band Reserve were destroyed, along with homes belonging to 30 member families, according to the First Nation. Chief Dan Wilson said the losses include irreplaceable family mementos, artwork and ceremonial regalia.
Salvation Army volunteers have been offering food, drinks and support at the emergency centre. Wilson said residents cannot yet return to evacuated areas because hot spots remain and a new spot fire recently broke out in the community. He said rebuilding will take years.
