U.S. President Donald Trump says the United States is working on a deal to buy potash from Belarus in an effort to reduce its reliance on Canadian fertilizer. In a social-media post Monday morning, Trump said the price would be “substantially less” than what American buyers pay Canadian exporters, and called the prospective agreement good news for U.S. farmers and ranchers.

Potash prices rose sharply after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 and have since declined, though they remain above prewar levels. The United States relies heavily on Canadian potash: Saskatchewan-based producer Nutrien Ltd. says Canada supplies more than 80 per cent of the potash used on U.S. farms.

Natural Resources Canada says the United States imported $4.2 billion worth of potash in 2025, nearly half of Canada’s potash exports. Potash, a key fertilizer ingredient, remains exempt from U.S. tariffs. Canada produced about one-third of the world’s supply in 2023, followed by Russia and Belarus.
