Terry Fox Run sites in Surrey and Delta will host events Sept. 20 as Marathon of Hope continues

Four Surrey sites and two Delta sites will host Terry Fox Run events this week and next, raising funds for cancer research while honouring Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope. The 46th annual fundraiser continues the run Fox was forced to stop in 1980; close to four million Canadians in 600 communities are symbolically carrying it on this year.

Run day is Sunday, Sept. 20. A two-kilometre walk at SFU Surrey will instead take place Tuesday, Sept. 22, to honour “an SFU student and Canadian hero whose legacy continues to change lives.” Other sites listed at terryfox.org include Fraser Heights Village, Fleetwood Park, South Surrey Athletic Park and Sungod Arena. Newton and Cloverdale are listed on the website as “not in-person.” People of all ages and abilities are invited to walk, run, blade, skate or wheel on Sept. 20.

The Terry Fox School Run will follow this fall, with more than 10,000 schools across Canada expected to participate. Earlier this year, the Terry Fox Foundation said it had surpassed $1 billion raised for cancer research over four decades of Terry Fox Run participation.

“Terry believed that research could change the future of cancer, and Canadians have spent more than four decades helping turn that belief into action,” foundation CEO Michael Mazza said. He said national collaboration and data sharing are advancing precision medicine across Canada, and called on schools and communities to fundraise toward Fox’s dream of a world without cancer.
