$2.4 million in bike-lane improvements planned for Richmond’s Bridgeport area
Richmond will close cycling-network gaps around Aberdeen, Capstan and Bridgeport through work funded largely by federal and TransLink programs.

Richmond plans $2.4 million in cycling-route improvements to close gaps and improve connections among the Aberdeen, Capstan and Bridgeport areas in north Richmond. The federal Active Transportation Fund and TransLink’s Local Government Funding program will cover 75 per cent of the cost.
A 2022 city staff report identified areas around Sexsmith and Brown roads as frequent gaps in Richmond’s cycling network. The upgrades are intended to improve access to the Canada Line Bridge between Richmond and Vancouver.
New east- and westbound bike lanes will be built on Browngate Road from No. 3 Road to Hazelbridge Way, connecting with the Sexsmith route. Brown Road will gain northbound lanes between Cambie Road and Sweet Avenue, beside Aberdeen Neighbourhood Park. The work also includes revised pavement markings, signs, extruded curbs, delineators, detection loops and asphalt letdowns.
The project will continue the existing network along Sexsmith Road and complete a connection from Patterson Road to Beckwith Road. It includes protected bike lanes on the north side of Sea Island Way and removal of existing medians on Sexsmith Road between Sea Island Way and Bridgeport Road, along with lane reconfiguration, markings, signs, curb improvements and delineators.
Construction had been expected to begin earlier this year. A new sign at Browngate and No. 3 roads says work should begin this fall and finish by winter.
