Construction begins on Newton Community Centre in Surrey
Surrey has begun work on the $310.6-million Newton Community Centre, a 175,000-square-foot facility expected to open in spring 2030.

Construction has begun on Surrey’s Newton Community Centre, one of the largest capital-project investments in the city’s history. Crews are removing decommissioned infrastructure, grading the site and carrying out further geotechnical testing.
Mayor Brenda Locke said the project will bring recreation, cultural and library services together in a single community hub for Newton, Surrey’s largest town centre.
The 175,000-square-foot facility is to include a 50-metre lap pool, leisure pool, hot tub, sauna, two gymnasiums, fitness centre, multi-purpose and arts spaces, child-care areas and a new 40,000-square-foot library. The library will be more than twice the size of the existing Newton branch.
Construction follows completion of the new Newton Community Centre road, which will provide a direct route from King George Boulevard for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers travelling to the future recreation centre. The road is scheduled to open in the coming weeks.
The $310.6-million project is on the east side of King George Boulevard beside the Newton Seniors Centre. It supports Surrey’s long-term vision for a revitalized Newton town centre and is expected to open in spring 2030.
