CMHC says annual pace of housing starts edged lower in August
Canada’s seasonally adjusted annual rate of housing starts was 229,046 units in August, slightly below July, while a modest rise in Quebec and Alberta only partly offset declines elsewhere.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. says the seasonally adjusted annual rate of housing starts was 229,046 units in August, down slightly from 229,360 in July. The six-month moving average for all areas in Canada was 244,149 in August, a 1.3 per cent decline from July.
Actual monthly housing starts in centres with populations of 10,000 or more totalled 17,691 in August, compared with 18,112 units in August 2025. The annual pace of rural starts was estimated at 11,224 units.
CMHC deputy chief economist Kevin Hughes said housing starts continued to trend slightly lower in August. Modest gains in Quebec and Alberta only partly offset declines in other provinces, most notably Ontario, he said.
