Surrey Alliance Church shifts services after fire damages sanctuary
A fire damaged Surrey Alliance Church’s sanctuary on Aug. 14, forcing the congregation to move worship services to other spaces on its property.

Surrey Alliance Church has begun restoration work after a fire on Friday, Aug. 14, damaged the south wall and roof of its sanctuary. The fire also caused water and smoke damage, and its cause remains under investigation.
Lead pastor Mike Knott said the congregation of about 175 cannot use its regular worship space or some ministry rooms. Services are being moved to the parking lot and a meeting room in another building on the property at 13474 96 Ave.; the Aug. 23 service was planned for the parking lot.
Knott said the fire has left congregants disappointed, confused and sad, while others have emphasized that the church is its people rather than its building. He said about 174 people gathered the previous Sunday to pray.
The church has served Central Surrey since 1960. Knott said it will continue serving the community, though arrangements for its former extreme-weather shelter and community events remain uncertain. Updates are posted at facebook.com/SurreyAllianceChurch.
