The BC Coroners’ Service is investigating the death of an 18-year-old B.C. man following an e-scooter incident in Kamloops.

Kamloops RCMP say the man was found after an incident near Battle Street and Lee Road shortly before 4 a.m. on Aug. 16. He was taken to hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.

Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet said police seized the scooter for investigation. No helmet was found at the scene, suggesting the rider may not have been wearing one, and police have found no evidence another vehicle was involved.

Witnesses are asked to call Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 and cite file 2026-27084.

The death comes amid wider safety concerns. BC Children’s Hospital reported 81 e-scooter-related emergency visits in 2025, up from 37 in 2024. Burnaby RCMP issued 57 tickets during an Aug. 19 e-scooter and e-bike enforcement campaign, reminding riders that they must be at least 16, wear a helmet, avoid earbuds and passengers, and keep e-scooters below 25 km/h.
