One hospitalized after officer-involved shooting in Burnaby: RCMP

B.C. RCMP say a man was hospitalized Sunday morning after an officer shot him in Burnaby. Officers were called to a home on Kingsway Avenue at about 10:15 a.m. for a reported disturbance and encountered the man when they arrived. “One officer fired their firearm, striking the man,” Mounties said. B.C. Emergency Health Services treated and transported him to hospital. No one else was injured in the altercation.

RCMP said they notified the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO), which is investigating the shooting. Police will release no further information. The IIO said officers responded to a “possible domestic dispute” and is asking anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.

The IIO will determine whether the man’s injuries meet the “serious harm” threshold under the provincial Police Act. If serious harm is established, the office will consider whether it is connected to police officers’ actions or inaction. The IIO said the investigation will continue to examine all available evidence to determine what happened if both conditions are met. At its conclusion, the chief civilian director will consider whether there are reasonable grounds to believe an offence may have occurred.

The IIO investigates all B.C. incidents involving police officers that result in serious harm or death to a member of the public, whether or not there is an allegation of police wrongdoing. Anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information about the incident can call the IIO witness line at 1-855-446-8477 or fill out the contact form at https://iiobc.ca/contact-us/.
