Vancouver Police say a suspect remains at large after a man’s pant leg was randomly set on fire while he sat on a park bench near English Bay early Wednesday. The 57-year-old was alone near Beach Avenue and Davie Street at about 12:45 a.m. when an unknown person approached. Police said the person poured a liquid accelerant on the man’s pant leg and lit it with a lighter before fleeing. There was no warning or provocation, and no words or threats were exchanged before the assault. The man stamped out the fire and was not injured.
Officers searched the area but did not find the suspect. Police described the suspect as about 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, with an average build, wearing dark clothing and something white around their neck. Const. Darren Wong called it a completely unprovoked, random attack in a statement and urged anyone with information to call 604-717-3321.
