Will Ferrell’s ‘O Canada’ performance draws online praise and jokes
Will Ferrell surprised thousands at a live SmartLess taping at the Hollywood Bowl on Oct. 17 by singing “O Canada.” After video of the performance went viral, fans praised his spirit, floated honorary-Canadian status and joked about making him U.S. ambassador to Canada.

Will Ferrell made a surprise appearance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Oct. 17 during a live taping of the SmartLess podcast. The show is hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Canadian actor Will Arnett. Tens of thousands of people had gathered to watch the hosts record an episode on stage, and several unexpected stars appeared, including Ferrell. He opened the festivities with a rendition of Canada’s national anthem, “O Canada,” wearing a Canadian tuxedo. Ferrell grew up in Irvine, California, and starred in the comedy Anchorman.
After video of the performance went viral, one Instagram user commented, “His voice is like a combination of Fergie and Jesus.” The article said Ferrell may not have an angelic voice, but that he has the spirit. Some online commenters are making the case for him to become an honorary Canadian. Canadian actor Jill Hennessy, who appeared in Law & Order, wrote: “He has ALWAYS been a hot, honorary Canadian, in my humble opinion.”
Other fans jokingly suggested making Ferrell U.S. ambassador to Canada and removing P. Hoekstra. They were referring to Pete Hoekstra, the current U.S. ambassador to Canada, whom the article says has drawn criticism for anti-Canadian comments. An online petition has also been created calling for his removal. The article does not give details of the comments.
Ferrell has filmed many movies in Canada, including the Christmas classic Elf. One fan wrote, “He’s never looked better,” while another said, “Love him even more now!” Canadian Tire also praised the performance as having “the most beautiful sound.” The article closed with a joke that the rendition could have used more cowbell.
