Speeding and distracted driving remain leading concerns on Richmond roads, August report says
Richmond RCMP issued more than 1,297 Motor Vehicle Act tickets and charges in August while targeting speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving and HOV lane compliance.

Richmond RCMP said officers continued proactive traffic enforcement throughout August, issuing more than 1,297 Motor Vehicle Act violation tickets and charges as part of efforts to improve road safety and respond to community concerns. Enforcement targeted speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, HOV lane compliance and locations identified through public complaints.
The month’s violations included 190 driver’s licence infractions, 194 distracted-driving offences, 34 impaired-driving offences involving drugs or alcohol, and two e-scooter violations. Targeted operations addressed cellphone use, HOV lane compliance and concerns about illegal passenger drop-offs near No. 3 Road and Westminster Highway. On Steveston Highway, focused speed enforcement found 48 speed-related violations.
Police reported several significant violations. A driver travelling 47 km/h over the posted speed limit on Highway 91 near the Knight Street Bridge had their vehicle impounded for seven days. Another driver, recorded at 103 km/h in a posted 50 km/h zone on Westminster Highway, received an excessive-speed violation and a seven-day vehicle impound. Officers also took action against a motorcyclist for stunting after observing the rider lift the front wheel while accelerating through a turn; the motorcycle was impounded for seven days.
Richmond RCMP also took part in a three-part e-scooter and e-bike safety outreach campaign in August, focused on regulations and safe operating practices. The next event is scheduled for Sept. 9, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Railway Greenway and Granville Avenue.
Sgt. Stephen Large of the Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit said traffic safety remains a priority. He said targeted enforcement and public education would continue to address risky driving behaviours and community concerns, and reminded motorists, cyclists and e-scooter users to follow traffic laws, avoid distractions and travel at safe speeds.
