Preliminary reporting by the BC Coroners Service (BCCS) shows that 113 people died from unregulated drug toxicity in July 2026 and 126 in August. Among deaths in those two months, 188 people were male and 51 were female. So far in 2026, males account for 76 per cent of unregulated drug deaths reported to BCCS and females for 24 per cent. People aged 30 to 59 account for 69 per cent of the province’s drug toxicity deaths this year.

In July and August, the Fraser and Vancouver Coastal health authorities each recorded 68 drug toxicity deaths, the highest totals in B.C. for those months. Together, the two authorities account for 54 per cent of such deaths so far in 2026. The cities with the highest numbers of unregulated drug deaths this year are Vancouver (237), Surrey (82) and Greater Victoria (80). Northern and Island health authorities have the highest rates this year, at 43 and 34 deaths per 100,000 people, respectively.

In 2026, fluorofentanyl has become the most common substance detected in expedited toxicological testing, found in 68 per cent of decedents who underwent that testing. Cocaine was detected in 56 per cent, followed by methamphetamine (53 per cent), fentanyl (50 per cent) and desalkylgidazepam (21 per cent). July and August reporting shows evidence of smoking as the most common mode of unregulated drug consumption among decedents, at 65 per cent and 67 per cent, respectively.

The number of unregulated drug deaths equated to 3.6 deaths per day in July and 4.1 per day in August. So far in 2026, 51 per cent of deaths occurred in private residences, compared with 19 per cent outdoors.

BCCS says the figures are preliminary and may change as additional toxicological results are received and investigations conclude. The report and related resources are available at:
