Family remembers Burnaby senior killed by stray bullet as a gentle spirit
Chang Yong Cho, 85, was found shot in his Kingsway apartment on Aug. 30, hours after gunfire was reported nearby in Burnaby.

The family of Chang Yong Cho, the 85-year-old man killed by a stray bullet in his Burnaby apartment last month, says he lived a life of faith, integrity and service to others.
In a statement shared by homicide investigators, his sons Justin and David Cho described their father as a gentle spirit with unwavering kindness. They said he loved golf, dancing, meals with friends and time with family.
Cho died Aug. 30. Police had responded to reports of gunfire near 18th and Humphries avenues early that morning. Burnaby RCMP found him during a wellness check at his Kingsway apartment hours later, about one block from the shooting scene.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team does not believe the shooting was gang- or drug-related, but says it appears to have stemmed from an undisclosed personal dispute. Investigators believe young people in the community, and possibly their parents, may have information that could help.
Cho’s sons urged anyone with information to come forward and asked the young people identified by investigators, along with their parents, to surrender to police. His wife, Keum Soon Lee, died in 2012 after Parkinson’s disease.
