The City of Delta and its Host Nations have unveiled two Coast Salish Welcome Poles at Delta City Hall. Created by artists from Tsawwassen First Nation and Musqueam Indian Band, the poles were installed following a traditional protocol ceremony on September 9 and now welcome visitors to the building.

The designs were created by Bryce Williams and Karl Morgan of Tsawwassen First Nation and Thomas Cannell of Musqueam Indian Band. Inspired by the history and territory, one pole features a male figure and the other a female figure, with imagery representing the shared history of the lands, water and wildlife.

Located in City Hall’s front courtyard, the poles follow the traditional placement of welcoming guests. The city said the installation recognizes its relationship with its Host Nations and its continuing commitment to meaningful reconciliation.

Mayor George V. Harvie said the poles recognize the importance of Coast Salish culture and traditions in the region’s past and future, and thanked the artists for their collaboration and guidance. Tsawwassen First Nation Chief Laura Cassidy said the City Hall installation acknowledges ancestral territories and enduring connections to the place. Musqueam Indian Band Chief Wayne Sparrow said the poles reflect Musqueam’s deep connection to the lands and waters and will remind visitors of the peoples who have cared for the lands since time immemorial.
