South Surrey shredding event raises $6,430 for firefighters’ charity
A four-hour fall fundraiser at Semiahmoo Shopping Centre on Sept. 26 raised $6,430 for Surrey Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society and shredded six tons of paper.

A shredding event at Semiahmoo Shopping Centre raised money for programs and services supporting families affected by traumatic wounds or injuries. The fall fundraiser, held Sept. 26 over four hours, raised $6,430 for Surrey Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society. Donations for the secure destruction of private documents fund the event. A news release said the money supports community families through financial assistance, medical and health care, school programs, and services for people affected by traumatic wounds or injuries.
Six tons of paper were shredded on Sept. 26, equivalent to saving 36 mature trees, the release said. The shopping centre started the initiative about 15 years ago. More than $116,000 has been raised to date, according to the release.
The spring event, held in April, raised just under $8,000, plus 300 pounds of food for Sources White Rock-South Surrey Food Bank.
