1984 photo recalls Richmond’s Time Square shopping centre
A 1984 archive photo offers a look at Time Square’s shops and the cars on Richmond streets, as the No. 3 Road site awaits redevelopment.

A 1984 photograph shared by Friends of the Richmond Archives captures Time Square, one of Richmond’s early shopping centres, and a row of period vehicles parked outside its stores.
The photo, published in the Richmond Review in August 1984, appears to show vehicles including a Chevy Chevelle, Honda Civic, Dodge Omni and Mazda RX-7. Businesses visible in the image include Kerrisdale Cameras, Brighouse Travel, the Canton Wun Tun House, H&R Block and Time Square Hair.
The No. 3 Road area between Cook and Park roads was also remembered in posts on a local nostalgia Facebook group as a gathering place associated with the “Hoods Up” gang and quarter-mile drag racing.
The lot is slated for redevelopment with 169 condominium units and about 20,000 square feet of commercial space.
