87-year-old man targeted in suspected distraction theft in Vancouver
Vancouver police say a woman posing as a friendly stranger used fake jewellery to distract an 87-year-old man and steal his ring in East Vancouver. The VPD is renewing its warning to seniors and sharing prevention advice.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is again warning seniors after an 87-year-old man was targeted in a suspected distraction theft in East Vancouver. The incident happened yesterday afternoon near Renfrew Street and East 1st Avenue, while the man was walking in an alley. A man and a woman in a white sedan approached him. The woman, seated in the passenger seat, started a conversation and placed fake jewellery on his wrist while shaking his hand, then took his ring. He realized moments later that the ring was missing, went home and called police.
VPD Sgt. Adam Donaldson said distraction theft suspects often appear friendly and make excuses to get close to victims. He said the department wants seniors to know the tactics thieves use so they can avoid becoming victims.
The VPD advises people to be cautious of strangers who stand unusually close or try to make physical contact, to politely step back if someone enters their personal space, and not to let strangers handle their belongings.
Police describe the female suspect as Middle Eastern or South Asian and say she spoke without an accent. The male suspect, who was driving, is described as a short man of Middle Eastern or South Asian background. Anyone who believes they have been a victim of a distraction theft is asked to call 911 immediately.
