Richmond RCMP to hold boating safety checks Aug. 1
Richmond RCMP will speak with boaters and check required equipment and documents at McDonald Beach Boat Launch on Aug. 1.

Richmond RCMP is reminding boaters to check their safety equipment and know the rules before heading onto local waterways this summer.
The detachment will hold a boating-safety education and compliance initiative at McDonald Beach Boat Launch on Aug. 1 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Officers will speak with boaters about safe practices and ensure required equipment and documentation are in place before vessels launch.
Police say changing conditions on waterways including the Fraser River make preparation important. Boaters should have an approved lifejacket for every person aboard, required safety equipment and proof of competency.
Staff Sgt. Maj. Ross Lundie of the Richmond RCMP Boat Patrol Unit also warned that alcohol and drugs impair judgement and reaction time on the water just as they do on the road. Operating a boat while impaired is a criminal offence in Canada. RCMP conduct regular patrols and safety checks throughout the boating season.
