Canadian universities have recruited 64 international scientists and researchers in the first intake of a program intended to attract leading academics from around the world.

The federal government is providing $504 million over eight years for the hires. Universities involved include the University of British Columbia, McGill University and the University of Toronto.

Several recruits previously worked at prominent U.S. institutions, including Harvard and MIT. The four highest-paid Eddie Goldenberg Distinguished Research Chairs are among those formerly based in the United States.

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly joined the announcement at UBC in Vancouver on Thursday and said Canada was increasing its commitment to science. More than $37 million in additional funding is to support the recruitment of 63 emerging leaders over the next year.

The chairs are named for Eddie Goldenberg, a former policy adviser and chief of staff to prime minister Jean Chrétien who died last month. The government said the name recognizes his long-standing contribution to Canada’s research and innovation landscape.
