Canada urges caution for Japan travel as Typhoon Saudel nears
Canada has updated its Japan travel advisory as Typhoon Saudel is expected to affect Okinawa and the Amami Islands from Aug. 24 to 27, disrupting flights and ferries.

The federal government is urging Canadians travelling to Japan to exercise extra caution as Typhoon Saudel is expected to affect southern Japan, including Okinawa and the Amami Islands, between Aug. 24 and 27.
Canada’s advisory warns of excessive rainfall and violent winds, along with possible flash flooding and landslides. It says the storm could disrupt transportation, power and water supplies, telecommunications, emergency services and medical care.
Hundreds of flights to and from Okinawa Prefecture have been cancelled, affecting thousands of travellers, according to The Japan Times. Ferry services to and from the island have also been cancelled.
Travellers are advised to monitor local weather and news reports, follow local authorities’ directions, keep airline or tour-operator emergency contacts available and be prepared to alter travel plans on short notice. Typhoons commonly affect Japan from June through October, especially the south and surrounding islands.
