Five Surrey elementary schools have been selected by Indigo stores in the Lower Mainland for the company’s Adopt a School fundraiser, led by the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation. The campaign is running at Indigo, Chapters and Coles stores across Canada.

Grandview Corners Indigo in South Surrey is supporting Kennedy Trail Elementary School and aims to add 689 books to its library. The other participating Surrey schools are Woodland Park Elementary, supported by Indigo Richmond Centre; W.E. Kinvig Elementary, supported by Indigo Metrotown; Prince Charles Elementary, supported by Coles Westshore Town Centre; and Don Christian Elementary, supported by Indigo Langley.

Sonia Dhungana, customer experience leader at Grandview Corners Indigo, said the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation has worked since 2004 to put books in the hands of children at high-needs elementary schools. She said the foundation, together with Indigo, its customers and employees, has committed to more than 3,500 high-needs schools and affected more than one million children.

Dhungana said every dollar raised through Adopt a School goes directly to a store’s partner school. Each year, the foundation accepts applications from hundreds of high-needs elementary schools and matches participating stores with schools in local or remote Canadian communities through a selection process.

The fundraiser runs from Sept. 4 to Oct. 4, and community members can donate any amount at participating stores. Grandview Corners Indigo is also offering a children-and-parent activity table, a “Blind Date With a Book” display and donation-themed bookmarks. Dhungana said the program enables high-needs schools to choose books that reflect their needs, interests and communities.
