The Richmond Terry Fox Run returns to Garry Point Park at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, bringing residents together to support cancer research and carry on Terry Fox’s dream of a world without cancer.

This year marks the 46th anniversary of Fox’s Marathon of Hope, which has inspired more than $1 billion in fundraising. On April 12, 1980, the 21-year-old from Port Coquitlam began a cross-Canada run to raise awareness and funds for cancer research while his osteosarcoma was in remission. Cancer recurrence ended his 143-day, 5,373-kilometre run on Sept. 1; he died 10 months later.

Fox’s legacy has inspired fundraising in more than 650 communities in Canada and internationally. Co-organizers Howard and Marla Jampolsky said his courage and determination showed what one person can inspire in others.

People of all ages and abilities can walk, run, wheel or ride in the non-competitive event. Registration is available online or in person at Garry Point Park, 12011 Seventh Ave., beginning at 9 a.m.

Information on registration, fundraising, donations and merchandise is available through the Richmond Terry Fox Run webpage. Merchandise includes the 2026 Adidas Orion Terry Fox shoe, tote bags, T-shirts and hoodies; proceeds support cancer research in Canada. The Terry Fox Foundation said in February that it had surpassed $1 billion for life-saving cancer research in Canada.
