Vancouver police say 13 blessing scams targeting elderly Chinese victims have been reported so far in 2026, with victims losing more than $300,000 in cash, gold and jewelry.

At the same point last year, the Vancouver Police Department had recorded six incidents involving about $200,000 in valuables. More than half of this year’s cases occurred in east and southeast Vancouver, and investigators believe additional victims may not have come forward.

Police say scammers approach victims, often speaking their language, and exploit fears that a family misfortune or curse will occur unless valuables are spiritually blessed. Victims are persuaded to return with money or jewelry, which is then switched for worthless items through deception and sleight of hand.

VPD released further images and video connected to a June 24 case in the 2500 block of East 20th Avenue. A 78-year-old woman lost $23,282 and three pieces of jewelry, police said.

Police advise anyone approached in this way not to hand over valuables, to leave, tell a family member and call 911 immediately. Officers will distribute awareness flyers Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Chong Lee Market, 3818 Rupert St., and T&T Supermarket, 2206 Kingsway.
