During Fire Prevention Week, October 4 to 10, Coquitlam Fire/Rescue is reminding residents to use and charge lithium-ion batteries properly to reduce fire risk. These batteries power many household devices, including smartphones, laptops, smoke alarms, toys, e-cigarettes, e-bikes, e-scooters and electric cars. Residents should follow the manufacturer’s charging instructions and buy only approved, certified batteries and charging equipment. Look for a recognized safety certification mark, such as UL, ETL or CSA, indicating that the product meets established safety standards.

**Safe charging is a superpower** Make a smart choice whenever you plug in. Safe charging habits can help prevent lithium-ion battery fires. Use the cord and charger supplied with the device, or ones approved by its manufacturer. The wrong charger can damage the battery and increase the chance of a fire. Cheap or no-name chargers may not meet important safety standards.

Charge devices on a hard, flat surface. Devices and chargers generate heat during normal charging. Soft surfaces such as beds, pillows and couches can trap heat and block airflow, which can cause a battery to overheat. Use a table, desk or bare floor instead.

Stop using a device if it feels very hot, starts to swell, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire. Unplug the device when it is fully charged; leaving it plugged in can add heat and stress the battery.

When possible, charge large items such as e-bikes, e-scooters and power tools outdoors. Their batteries are larger and store more energy. If a battery fails, a fire can grow quickly, so keep exits near the charging area clear.
