South Surrey golf course raises funds to relocate bald eagle nest
Nico Wynd Golf Course is raising money to move a bald eagle nest from a decaying grand fir to an artificial nest pole after the birds leave for winter.

A South Surrey golf course is raising funds to relocate a bald eagle nest from a compromised tree after experts warned the grand fir supporting it could fail.
The nest at Nico Wynd Golf Course is in a tree with rot at its base and is close to homes. Raptor specialist Myles Lamont said the tree might remain standing for years but could also fall in the next windstorm, creating an insurance risk.
The plan is to move the nest after the eagles leave for the winter. A tall pole with a custom aluminum basket lined with natural nesting material would be installed nearby, giving the birds a replacement site when they return. Lamont said winter nest relocations have a success rate of more than 90 per cent.
Lamont said the Nicomekl and Serpentine river mouths and Boundary Bay offer exceptionally rich raptor habitat. The City of Surrey and the province are involved in planning the move.
A GoFundMe campaign will also help relocate an osprey nest at the other end of the course, where its supporting tree is also compromised. Donations can be made at https://gofund.me/1672ae35.
