Self-Advocates of Semiahmoo will host a mixer for Surrey mayoral candidates on Oct. 13 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Semiahmoo House, 15306 24 Ave. An emailed advisory says the event is not a debate, but is designed to give attendees an opportunity to hear from each candidate.

As of Oct. 3, confirmed candidates were Linda Annis, Brenda Locke, Honveer Singh Randhawa, Mike Starchuk, Troy Van-Vliet and Doug McCallum. Igal Ammons II had not confirmed by then. Each candidate will be asked a question on housing, affordability, health, public safety and transportation.

After the candidates respond, members of SAS will speak about what matters to the disability movement and how local leadership can help build a more inclusive community, according to a post on the group’s Facebook page. There will also be time to mingle.

SAS is a self-advocacy group led by people with developmental disabilities. Members of Semiahmoo House Society formed it to support and empower their peers with developmental disabilities through leadership, advocacy and community engagement.
