Richmond RCMP warn of scammers trading ‘worthless paper’ for valuables
Richmond RCMP say online marketplace sellers of high-value items have reported more than $22,000 in losses since last November. Police advise sellers to verify payment before handing over property and, where possible, meet at a detachment exchange zone.

Richmond RCMP are warning people who sell high-value items on online marketplaces after victims handed over valuables and received envelopes containing “worthless paper,” police say. Mounties have investigated multiple incidents arranged through online marketplaces since last November. Reported losses so far exceed $22,000. Investigators have also identified similar incidents in other Lower Mainland jurisdictions, suggesting a broader regional trend.
Richmond RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Melissa Lui said the suspects are skilled at creating a false sense of security during transactions and rely on sellers being distracted at a critical moment. She urged people selling high-value items online to use caution, carefully verify payment before handing over their property and arrange transactions at a police detachment exchange zone whenever possible.
The Richmond RCMP detachment at 11411 No. 5 Rd., south of Steveston Highway, has an exchange zone. It is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, Sunday and statutory holidays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Police offer these precautions: arrange transactions at a detachment exchange zone where available; count and inspect all cash before handing over the item; be cautious if a buyer seems rushed or tries to create distractions; consider electronic payment methods that can be verified immediately; and, for a large cash payment, complete the transaction at a financial institution where the funds can be verified on the spot. Trust your instincts and end the transaction if something feels suspicious.
Anyone who believes they may have been targeted by a similar scam is encouraged to contact local police to report it.
