Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Thomas Muller says he has not decided whether he will continue his playing career after the current Major League Soccer season ends.

The 37-year-old said after Wednesday’s training that his private situation, contract, prospective city, team outlook and physical availability will all factor into his decision. There are no concrete answers yet, he said, although he feels comfortable in Vancouver and enjoys playing with his teammates.

The German star joined the Whitecaps in August 2025 after 17 seasons with Bayern Munich, where he scored 250 goals in all competitions and helped win 13 league championships and 33 titles overall. He won the 2014 World Cup with Germany, scoring five times, and earned the Golden Boot at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with five goals and three assists.

Muller has recorded 15 goals and 10 assists in 28 MLS regular-season appearances, helping the Whitecaps reach their first MLS Cup final in December. He said his competitive drive remains strong and that the team, while capable of better results, still has work to do.

Head coach Jesper Sorensen said Muller has also been important away from matches, helping make the club’s day-to-day environment stronger and more competitive while supporting his teammates.

Vancouver, 25-15-6, enters Saturday’s home match against D.C. United in first place in the Western Conference after spending the season near the top of the standings. The club lost to CF Montréal in the Canadian Championship semifinal earlier this month.

Muller’s initial contract ran through the 2025 MLS season and included an option for 2026. MLS is set to play two seasons in 2027, beginning with a condensed February-to-May sprint season before changing to an international summer-to-spring calendar. Sporting director and CEO Axel Schuster said the club is working on a potential new agreement, but no arrangement has yet been reached that satisfies all parties.
