Canucks sign Zeev Buium to eight-year, US$75-million contract
The 20-year-old defenceman agreed to a deal worth US$9.38 million annually before the NHL’s new maximum contract term takes effect.

The Vancouver Canucks announced Friday they have signed 20-year-old defenceman Zeev Buium to an eight-year contract worth US$9.38 million annually, or about US$75 million overall.
Buium joined Vancouver last season as part of the return in the trade that sent former captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild. He had three goals and 11 assists in 45 games after arriving with the Canucks.
General Manager Ryan Johnson described Buium as a key member of the club’s young core and a player the team intends to build around. Johnson said the Canucks believe Buium has considerable upside and can flourish in the system and locker-room environment the team is creating.
Buium is expected to take on a larger role in 2026-27 after fellow left-shot defenceman Marcus Pettersson was traded to New York during the off-season. The deal was completed before the Sept. 16 deadline tied to the NHL’s new collective bargaining agreement, which reduces the maximum eligible contract term from eight years to seven. Buium and the Canucks open training camp in Penticton on Sept. 17.
