Vancouver public school support workers authorize strike action with nearly 97 per cent in favour
The union says about 900 support staff voted nearly 97 per cent in favour of authorizing strike action. It could issue 72 hours’ notice at any time but is urging the school board to resume talks.

The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 963 says members representing support staff at Vancouver’s public schools voted over the weekend, with almost 97 per cent in favour of authorizing strike action. Business manager Tim De Vivo said in a statement that the union “could serve 72-hour strike notice at any time,” but is urging the Vancouver School Board to resume talks.
The union says workers have been asked to accept concessions that would affect “existing working conditions” and job security. Talks stalled in September after the union says the board declined to discuss a counter-offer from workers.
The union represents about 900 support staff, including building engineers, custodians, chefs and bakers, culinary assistants, food service workers and supervision aides, among others. The Canadian Press first published this report on Oct. 5, 2026.
