Surrey outlines four major projects shaping city’s growth
Surrey has highlighted a new Newton community centre, a 72 Avenue extension, Centre Block and a 10,000-seat arena among projects planned through 2031.

Surrey has outlined four major projects now underway or in development, including new recreation facilities, a major road extension and downtown commercial and entertainment projects.
The city’s $310.6-million Newton Community Centre is planned as a 16,260-square-metre facility with a 50-metre pool, two full-size gymnasiums, fitness, arts, childcare and multipurpose spaces, plus an expanded library. Early works are scheduled to begin in summer 2026, with completion expected in spring 2030.
The 72 Avenue project, described by the city as its largest road investment, will extend the route from 152 Street to Highway 15 at a cost of more than $150 million. The planned east-west connection will link Newton, Fleetwood, Clayton and Cloverdale. Work is underway, with completion anticipated in 2031.
In Surrey City Centre, the first phase of Centre Block will include a 12-storey tower housing Simon Fraser University’s Stephens Family School of Medicine. Construction is expected to start late in 2026 and finish in summer 2030. The full two-phase project is expected to add about two million square feet of office and retail space.
A 10,000-seat City Centre Arena is also planned for downtown Surrey as the future home of the Vancouver Giants. The development includes a 250-room hotel with restaurants, a coffee shop and banquet space. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2027, with the arena and hotel anticipated to open in 2030.
