Wildlife groups call for end to outdoor plastic rodent traps
Critter Care Wildlife Society says it has treated more than 30 Lower Mainland animals injured by plastic snap traps and is urging people not to use them outdoors.

A South Langley wildlife rehabilitation centre says it has treated more than 30 animals injured by plastic rodent traps in recent weeks, prompting a call to stop using the devices outdoors.
Critter Care Wildlife Society said skunks, raccoons, squirrels and marmots have arrived with injuries including deep lacerations, broken toes, tissue damage and lost limbs. The centre said the toothed jaws of black plastic snap traps can become embedded in animals’ flesh.
The Fur-Bearers, a Canadian charity, says outdoor traps can harm wildlife moving through urban habitat and do not address underlying rodent attractants. The organization says people seeking humane alternatives can consult the BC SPCA’s AnimalKind program.
