A 23-year-old Kamloops man has received a 90-day driving ban after his Ford Ranger crashed into a concrete divider on Highway 1 near Aldergrove, according to Langley RCMP.

At about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, a witness called police while following the pickup near the 264 Street exit. The witness reported that it was swerving and driving on the shoulder. While the caller was still speaking with a police dispatcher, the truck struck a roadside divider, spun completely around from the far outside lane toward an inside off-ramp and came to rest on the shoulder. Dashcam video recorded the crash.

Officers arrived shortly afterward and found that the driver was a novice required to display an N sign. Police said he showed signs of impairment and failed a roadside breath screening.

The damaged truck was impounded for 30 days at the driver's expense, and he was fined $500. Cpl. Mansoor Sahak of Langley RCMP said police were grateful the driver's trip from Burnaby to Kamloops did not end in a fatality, and thanked the witness who reported the impaired driver. He said impaired driving is the leading cause of criminal deaths in Canada and is entirely preventable.
