Dustin Gastl, 43, has been sentenced to three years in custody after pleading guilty to indignity to human remains in connection with a 2023 Vancouver homicide investigation, police say.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services responded to a suspicious outdoor fire near Powell Street and Raymur Avenue in the Downtown Eastside on Jan. 3, 2023. Firefighters found human remains after putting out the blaze. The remains were later identified as those of 34-year-old Jeff Jeanty.

Gastl was sentenced Aug. 10. Police said he is already serving a sentence for an unrelated conviction, and the new three-year term will be served consecutively to that sentence.
